Complete design system rebuild addressing BitPay's outdated component library and inconsistent crypto-specific UI patterns using Figma's latest variables and advanced component architecture.

01. Problem

BitPay's outdated component library was slowing us down. We were rebuilding complex crypto UI patterns from scratch for every feature: modal types, key hierarchies, wallet pickers, network management. The inconsistent styles and lack of dark mode support made everything take longer than it should.

I tackled this as a solo project, working on it during Friday afternoons and spare time while keeping up with regular design work.

02. Solution

I rebuilt the entire design system using Figma's newest features, focusing on the app first since it had our latest design patterns. The new system handles all the crypto-specific complexity we deal with - from WalletConnect modals to the account hierarchies within keys.

The biggest win was finally getting proper dark and light mode support with automatic theme switching. No more manually designing everything twice.

03. Process

I prioritized a complete rebuild over trying to patch the old system since the architecture was fundamentally limited. To get the dev team on board, I created videos and live demos showing how the new components actually work and how they could implement the tokens.

04. Impact

Mock creation is about 30% faster now since I don't have to design dark mode separately - I just copy frames and switch the theme. We finally have a shared design language, and the team hasn't needed custom components in months. Everything just works consistently across the app.
